Territory ASSETS ARE NOT4SALE…NOT4LEASE!
TO SAVE OUR ASSETS… PUT THE CLP LAST
Volunteers campaigning in Alice Springs on the morning of November 30, 2015.
Adam Giles and the CLP have been called on to rule out all privatisation of the Northern Territory’s energy assets, as the Not4Sale campaign begins in the Territory.
Organisers of the community campaign are concerned about the future of publicly owned assets Power and Water and Territory Generation following the privatisation by the CLP government of the Port of Darwin, Territory Insurance Office and Darwin Buses.
Not4Sale campaigners are calling on Adam Giles to publicly rule out privatising the Territory’s electricity assets, and put a declaration against selling or leasing either Territory Generation or Power and Water in writing.
Chief Minister Adam Giles has stopped short of ruling out a lease deal when publicly discussing the future of Power and Water and Territory Generation.
ETU Organiser Stuart Traill said the Not4Sale campaign would begin rolling out across the Northern Territory this week, calling for clear direction from the CLP government on what their privatisation plans are for Power and Water.
“We have serious concerns if the CLP do privatise power assets that electricity prices will increase, electricity outages will be extended, jobs will be lost and services will be lost,” Mr Traill said.
“We demand that the CLP provide a public guarantee that they will not privatise, sell or lease Power and Water or Territory Generation.”
The NT campaign runs on the back of the successful Queensland Not4Sale campaign against the Newman Government’s plan to lease energy assets. The campaign helped topple the LNP and put a Labor Government opposed to asset sales into power.
“Nothing is stopping Adam Giles and the CLP in this term of government doing a lease like the Port of Darwin,” Mr Traill said.
“A lease is privatisation, the same as the sale of assets.
“The public don’t want weasel words. They want a clear answer that it won’t be sold, leased or privatised and it will stay in public hands.”
